Abstract

Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) is a nutritionally rich and economically important tropical fruit crop that plays a vital role in supporting small and marginal farmers. This study focuses on the production trends, cultivation practices, post-harvest challenges and value addition opportunities of jackfruit in the Panruti region of Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu. Primary data were collected from 120 farmers using a structured interview schedule, along with secondary data were collected from official sources. The results indicate that jackfruit cultivation has expanded over time; however, fluctuations in production and productivity are observed due to climatic variations, pest issues and inconsistent farm management practices. Panruti remains the dominant cultivation hub due to its favourable agro-climatic conditions and recognised fruit quality. Despite its potential, farmers face several challenges, including mechanical damage during harvesting, high perishability, lack of storage facilities, high transportation costs and price fluctuations. The socio-economic analysis reveals that most farmers are smallholders with limited adoption of improved varieties and modern technologies. Most farmers market jackfruit in fresh form with minimal value addition, limiting income generation. The study highlights value addition as a key solution to enhance profitability and reduce post-harvest losses. Products such as jackfruit leather and jackfruit-based noodles show high economic viability, while freeze-dried products have potential in premium markets. Overall, improving post-harvest infrastructure, promoting value addition and strengthening market linkages can significantly enhance farmer income and support sustainable agricultural development.
